Development updates

News about the game, the demo and the Steam release.

The Steam store page is planned

The Steam store page is planned. The link will appear on the website when it opens.

The free demo is available now in your desktop browser. Play Ruby Malone's first four chapters with no account and nothing to install. The full game will be a single purchase on Steam, with no subscription.

Downtown Tycoon is moving to Steam

The full game is planned for Steam as a purchase, with no subscription. All website sales stopped on 13 October. The free demo is still available, and you can still apply to help test the game.

There is no Steam store page, price or release date yet. A link will appear here when the store page is live. Earlier entries about memberships and passes describe plans that have ended.

The demo follows Ruby through four story chapters

The free demo now follows Ruby Malone, Emberside's fire chief. It has the first four chapters of her story on Bronze difficulty, with all thirteen tutorials. Each chapter opens when you finish the one before it.

Chapter 3 puts Ruby against Hank. Chapter 4 introduces land leases and auctions. Completed chapters, tutorials and settings are remembered in this browser, but the demo still cannot save a game in progress. Play each chapter in one sitting.

Earlier updates 9 entries

Older entries describe the game and plans at the time they were written. Website sales ended on 13 October 2026. The full game is now planned for Steam as a single purchase, with no subscription.

Earlier website sales plans (withdrawn)

The website introduced plans for memberships, a one-time pass and naming offers. Those plans were withdrawn on 13 October 2026, when Downtown Tycoon moved to a Steam release. Nothing is sold on this website.

The menu has its own music folder

The menu previously used a 1930s dance track from the game. It now has a separate music folder, ready for its own theme.

The 1990s music folder has its first track

The first track for the 1990s has been added. Three decades still need music.

Tutorial cards no longer cancel building placement

A tutorial card could cancel a building placement or explain a control you'd already used. Both problems are fixed, along with eleven other issues found while checking all thirteen tutorials.

The auction button now shows a gavel

A gavel replaces the clasped-hands icon to make the auction button easier to recognise.

Fortune Card payments are easier to follow

Money changes from Fortune Cards now apply when you press OK. The balance counts up in green for money received, or down in red for money lost.

Escape opens Options, and saves can be overwritten

Escape closes an open panel before opening Options. If you reuse a save name, the game asks which save you want to replace.

Eighteen sound effects

The game now has eighteen sound effects, including the till, construction, auctions and a warning for actions you can't take.

Music changes with the decade

The music changes with the decade. If a decade has no tracks, the game uses music from the most recent earlier decade with tracks. Most of the 1960s through 1990s still need music.
